Help & Advice

One of the best pieces of advice I can give you is to carry on looking for advice. In my experience those who survive and flourish in an expat environment are those who have done their homework in advance. Although this is still a very humble site, I do hope it is giving you some insight into the Danes and Denmark.

One person who for the past 25 years has made it her life’s work to study Denmark and all things Danish is Sabine Behrmann. She was born and bred in the northern part of Germany and came to Denmark in 1980. She had a thing for Denmark and wanted to learn Danish and everything about the tiny nordic Kingdom.

As it turned out, learning the language was the easy part. Learning to live with Danish mores proved more difficult. So after getting a Phd in Scandinavian literature from the University of Copenhagen, she found her calling as a coach and consultant: coaching other foreigners, that is, trying to navigate the minefield of life in Denmark. Her personal life is devided between family, political work, the development of live role playing games, and outings with other members of the Danish Mycological Society.

This deep study has recently been publicised in her most excellent blog. Informative and witty, well-written and well-researched. You owe it to yourself to follow this superb daily blog Get-to-know-the-Danes

You will also get much useful information as well as social networking at Foreigners in Denmark Both owners Paula Jota Pedersen and Kristian Pedersen, have been foreigners at some point in their lives, and understand the struggles of being a foreigner and the need to communicate with others going through similar situations. That’s why they decided to create a website that contains valuable resources to newcomers in Denmark, including a discussion forum where people can meet others and share their experiences. It is an online community designed to facilitate intercultural communication, interaction and friendships between Danes and foreigners living in Denmark. It provides useful resources in English to help newcomers in learning and understanding the Danish culture.

Finally, I always recommend the excellent The Expat Forum which strives to be a welcoming community where experienced ex-pats living all over the world offer first hand advice. The help offered may not be as pretty as the dream but it is genuine and offered by caring members who want you to learn from their experiences and mistakes.

The Expat forum is a true mix of members with interests all over the globe. The mix includes those who are starting to think about emigrating and retiring all the way through to members who have been enjoying the Ex-pat way of life for many years. Feel free to sign up and be a part of the community.
